Tennessee Sparrow (2)

A tribute to Loretta Lynn
Song Written and performed by John Richter, 2012

A Tennessee Sparrow in the trees
Singing her sweet melodies
Loving life’s memories
Little things like these

A coal miner’s daughter
Cold nights, laying next to Mama,
Papa’s drillin’ holes
in the deep belows
Only the Moon knows – her drama

And on she grew
while life circled her feet
The Moon came too
Made her love complete

Now a child rests her head
Listens to the sparrow sing
A song of Life, she said,
“My Mama’s everything…”

Heavens Gates: Open!
Release the doves!
Life’s not about her
It’s about who she loves

So when you hear the sparrows’ song
and you feel like singing along
and your heart feels like it belongs
To a Tennessee so strong…

Love her.
For that is what she is.

Woo Hoo, Baby

Tune and audio should be added soon…  I hope……
Thanks for stopping by – John

Ten years ago – or so
I saw a little boy at the grocery –
about 3 years old – with his momma –
Had his arms stretched straight out
– like he was a aer-o-plane
Leaning in towards his momma
and circlin’ her – and man,
I mean like Pearl Harbor baby…
And every go ’round he’d say
“woooooo   hoooooooo” –
really loud –
like he was a siren or something….

So I looked at my honey and said
“Oh baby, I got’s to do that –
Why can’t I do that?”
And my honey said
“Johnny, you can’t do that…
Now you’ll scare that little boy.
You a grown man, you got to reserve, baby,
you got to reserve…”

“Ok baby, guess I can do that.
I’ll try it anyway…
I won’t stretch out my arms
like a aer-o-plane –
I won’t even circle that
little boy’s momma,
(much as I might want to…)
no, no….
I’z gonna be a good boy,
yeah that’s right.
But honey, you know
That “woo hoo” is deep inside, baby
and you know it got to come out…”

Woo hoo, baby got to hear me
woo hoo, need ya’ real near me

Woo hoo, woo hoo
baby, woo hoo…

Yeah, every little boy want to know
how he gon’ get that prety little girl
So listen boy, this my song
I gonna help you right along

Woo hoo, baby, woo hoo little girl
woo hoo, darlin, woo hoo

Now ev’body says you got to know –
and ev’body knows you got to say:

Woo hoo, little girl
woo hoo, baby doll
woo hoo, yeah, woo hoo

you the prettiest thing I ever seen
come over here and shake that thing
I think you know what I mean, sugar
so come over here and shake that thing.

Yeah woo hoo baby, woo hoo darling
You know you make me move, baby
so shake it up over here in my groove…….
That’s right, just like that,
woo hoo darlin’, woo hoo

Little boy – when you done with aer-o-planes,
give this here a whirl – become a man…
You just say woo hoo, little darlin’
woo hoo……

My Friend Joe

It was so many years ago
I once had a friend named Joe
Listen to the words of the king
who loves his mighty Queen
Talking about Joe
You know I’m talking about Joe

Come and smile and drink some wine
Laugh and talk and pass the time
These days are sure lovely too
But when they’re gone I’m gonna miss you
I’m talking about you, Mister Joe,
I’m talking about you.

‘Cause ten years from now I’ll say
There was a friend from yesterday
We always laughed and passed the time,
by talking and sharing that wine…
You and me, Mister Joe,
It was me and you.

Now when i see you on the road
I’ll smile and laugh and say “Hey there, Joe!”
But you won’t remember when
‘Cause we’ll be different men,
all those years ago,
Mister Joe,
It was all those years ago.
I had a friend named Joe,
Good ole’ boy,
Talkin’ about you Joe
You remember when
Talkin’ ’bout Joe…..

Dog Named Blue

I once had a dog named Blue
the best dog i ever knew
He’d chase a squirrel for you
and help you skin the damn thing too

Now ole Blue was always by my side
even after I took a wife.
He was a best faithful friend
he stayed right here til the end.

Now Blue he’s up in Heaven now,
chasing them rebbits fat as cows,
probably looking down here
with a grin from ear to ear.

Now some days I whistle for ole Blue,
not ’cause I think he’ll come runnin,
Just bangin on Heaven’s door,
Wishing he was never done in.

I once had a dog named Blue
the best dog I ever knew
He’d chase a squirrel for you
and help you skin the damn thing too

She Gone Now

When I look at my life ten years from now,
I can see my wife ten years from now,
Looking just as beautiful as she does today.

And I wonder Lord, if You meant it
when you gave me her every minute,
until the day that she passed away.

Can you tell me what to do Lord,
Is life just gonna go on
am I ever gonna finish this song
Why did you leave me Lord,
leave me all alone
with nothing but these mem’ries
of my baby?

They ain’t nothing in this world
made me happier than that girl,
on the day that she married me.

Lord I never said it enough,
and I need another chance
Can you just let me tell her
my love will always last?

Lord I don’t understand
why you took her away,
I just want her to know
my love is here to stay.

Can you tell me what to do Lord,
Is life just gonna go on
am I ever gonna finish this song
Why did you leave me Lord,
leave me all alone
with nothing but these mem’ries
of my baby?

I Caught an Angel

When I saw her standing there
all alone in the night
all the boys were hootin and hollerin
and the girls were looking right
It looked like she had a halo
coming from the firelight
so I walked on over and took her hand
and knew she was mine that night.

I caught an angel.
I caught an angel,
deep inside the firelight.

I never knew that angels had
hair as black as coal.
I didn’t know their eyes so blue
made my spine shiver cold.
I never knew they’d sing to me
the songs of my soul.
I never knew they’d touch my heart
in ways I didn’t know.

I caught an angel.
I caught an angel,
deep inside the firelight.

Now if you ever meet an angel
callin’ herself Mary Jean,
Chances are pretty good
that you’ll know what I mean.
If she’s standing in the firelight
then give her this one for me.
Mary Jean, Mary Jean, Mary Jean.

Now I don’t know what
the limit is
on angels these days.
But I bagged that one
pretty good and
then let her get away.
I promised myself
if I found her again
I’d have this to say:
Mary Jean, Mary Jean, Mary Jean.

When I saw her standing there
all alone in the night
all the boys were hootin and hollerin
and the girls were looking right
It looked like she had a halo
coming from the firelight
so I walked on over and took her hand
and knew she was mine that night.

I caught an angel.
I caught an angel,
deep inside the firelight.

My Darling

In times like these
a man gets lonely.
his thoughts roam home
and to his family.
So yesterday I wrote one last note
to my dear sweet darling.

I told her of my love for Tenessee
and how her sweet love means everything to me,
she’s the most beautiful thing I ever did see,
and when I get home I’ll surely be
a man who makes her love worthy.

Now it’s sure a beautiful day
but there’s blood in the sun.
The Union’s got us cornered
and we’re on the run.
I see my name in the clouds
and just know that I’m done.

Lord when times were tough
I was always there for you.
When others failed
I pulled right through
and now I’m asking
this simple thing of you, dear Lord.

If you could please find it in your heart,
Then I’d offer this life and gladly part,
If you could just see that the last of what I am
is not seen by her in some cold telegram.

Can you tell her of my love for Tennessee?
And how her sweet love means everything to me?
That’s she’s the prettiest thing I ever did see?
And if I’d a got home I’d have surely been
a man who always made her love worthy?

Lord, please don’t let me down.
I’ll give you this life on this sacred ground,
If you’d just let my sweet darlin know
that she’s the prettiest thing I’ve ever known…
